Moriarty Mayor Ted Hart broke one of his first ties as newly-elected mayor.

In a short City Council meeting Tuesday night, Hart made the decision to request proposals for legal services for the city. Councillors Larry Irvin and Dennis Shanfeldt were for the RFP, while Bobby Ortiz and Steve Anaya wanted to extend the current contract with Law & Resource Planning Associates in Albuquerque for another year.

Anaya pointed out last year the city went out for RFP and only received one proposal, and the contract states that it can be renewed with the current firm for up to four years.

Clerk Sheila Murphy said she also has a concern that the city could be without legal services during the process because the current contract is up Aug. 12, and the city is required to give the firm 30-days notice.

Shanfeldt said maybe a short-term contract could be put into place while the request for proposal process goes on.

In other city business:

A resolution was passed approving submission of a grant application and acceptance of up to $395,675 in grant funding from the Federal Aviation Administration for taxiway and staging area construction at the airport.

The council approved going out to bid for phase 1 of the airport taxiway and staging area construction.

The 2010 compilation of the New Mexico Uniform Traffic Ordinance was approved after a public hearing.

Weston Curry was approved to be hired on as the battalion chief of the Fire Department. It was also approved to advertise for a fire fighter position.

Police Chief Bobby Garcia advised the council that the four new patrol units approved at the last council meeting have been ordered and are expected to be delivered in six to eight weeks.
